What is rock wool and what properties does it have?

Rock wool is a mineral wool made from molten rock transformed into fibers. In loose-fill form, it can be used for blown-in insulation in air cavities, suspended ceilings, and certain under-roof spaces.
It is notable for its thermal performance and fire resistance. Its exact properties depend on the specific product, available thickness, and installation density.

Property What it provides What to keep in mind
Thermal insulation Reduces heat transfer through the building envelope. Conductivity and the final result depend on the product, thickness, and density.
Fire performance There are blown-in insulation products classified as A1 (non-combustible). The classification of the specific product installed must always be verified.
Water-related behavior Certain products are water-repellent and exhibit low water absorption. It does not replace the diagnosis or repair of dampness or water infiltration issues.
Stability within the cavity When installed at the appropriate density, it remains stable within the cavity. Density and application must be adapted to the system and the type of cavity.

Advantages of rock wool as blown-in insulation

How we apply blown-in rock wool

01. Diagnóstico

We inspect the chamber with an endoscope to check its condition and determine if it is suitable.

02. Preparación

We define the access points and the installation density appropriate for the system.

03. Insuflado

We introduce the loose-fill rock wool using pneumatic equipment until it is distributed throughout the cavity.

04. Sellado

We seal the access points and check the finish upon completion.

Where and when we use rock wool

At Torregra, we use rock wool only when it suits the construction and the project’s thermal requirements. Before recommending it, we verify the existence of a suitable cavity or space and assess whether its performance characteristics are the most appropriate compared to other materials.

Application Primary objective When it can be applied
Walls and facades with a cavity Improving the thermal insulation of the building envelope. When the cavity has adequate thickness, continuity, and condition.
Suspended ceilings To reduce heat exchange through the upper part of the room. When there is an accessible space and the suspended ceiling allows for the intervention.
Attics and loft spaces Improving the thermal performance of the top floor. Depending on the configuration of the floor slab or the space beneath the roof.
Cavity walls Reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. When there is an accessible cavity suitable for blown-in insulation.

What is rock wool?

It is a mineral insulation material made from molten rock spun into fibers. In loose-fill form, it can be used for blown-in insulation in wall cavities and other suitable spaces.

Rock wool is a type of mineral wool. Glass wool also belongs to this family, but it is manufactured from different raw materials, and each product has its own specific performance characteristics. The choice depends on the project and the installation system.

During installation, the fibers can cause mechanical irritation, so appropriate protective equipment is used. Once blown in, the material remains confined within the cavity.

Many blown-in rock wool products have a Euroclass A1 rating. The classification should always be verified in the technical data sheet for the specific product.

Products specifically designed for blown-in application may exhibit low water absorption, but rock wool must not be used to conceal leaks, capillary action, or other moisture-related issues.

Is rock wool suitable for your home?

We inspect the air cavities and select the insulation based on your home's construction and actual needs.
